Spike Camp Duff Monster coffee bag with coffee beans on a wooden surface with a mountain backdrop

DARK ROAST

DUFF MONSTER

Duff is the layer of decomposed organic matter packed beneath the forest floor. Dry. Compressed. Slow to ignite. When it catches, it burns underground and invisible. The Duff Monster crawls under your feet and surfaces where it wants to.

This roast carries the same energy.
Bold dark cocoa flavor with a rugged, smoky finish. Heavy body.

Low acidity, easier on the stomach during long shifts in the field.

Dark roast holds up on camp heat better than lighter blends. Won't go harsh. Pre-ground coarse, to allow quick access for your Jetboil Coffee Press, French Press, Percolator, or in a pinch a flat bottom camp pour over.

Spike Camp Coffee is built for the wildland community. The people who drink their coffee on tailgates, firelines, logging roads, and ridgelines.

Duff is decades of dead material compressed into the forest floor. Needles. Decomposed foliage. Moss. Rotting wood broken down to the layer just above mineral soil. When it ignites, there is no flame. There is smoke rising from ground that should be cold. Heat six inches below a surface you already called out. A section you cleared at 1800 that is smoking again at 0600.

It burns underground. Moves below your cold trail. Comes back up on the other side of the line. The only way to kill it is mineral soil. Every inch. No calling it good because the shift is at fourteen hours.

The crew that does that work does not make the news. They dig the same section three times if that is what it takes. Then they go back to camp and do it again.

This roast is named for the hunt.

A slow-burn kind of strong that doesn't announce itself. It just keeps you moving until you realize you haven't thought about stopping.

All ratios below are based on a standard 8oz camp mug. If your mug runs larger, add half a tablespoon per extra 4oz.

Jetboil Coffee Press | Coarse Grind
1 to 2 heaping tablespoons per 8oz depending on how hard you want it. Turn the flame off before adding coffee. Steep 4 minutes. Press slow. Pour direct.

French Press | Coarse Grind
2 tablespoons per 8oz of water. Heat to near boil. Steep 4 minutes. Press slow.

Camp Percolator | Coarse Grind
2 heaping tablespoons per 8oz of water. Medium heat until it perks, then drop to low. Brew 6 to 8 minutes.

Adjust up or down by half a tablespoon to dial in your strength.

What is Duff Monster coffee?
Duff Monster is a dark roast coffee from Spike Camp Outpost, named for duff, the compressed organic layer beneath the forest floor that burns slow and invisible underground before anyone knows it is moving. Dark cocoa and molasses flavor. Heavy body. Low acidity. Roasted small batch by Evans Brothers Coffee in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Why is Duff Monster coffee low acidity?
Dark roasting breaks down chlorogenic acids, the compounds responsible for the acidic bite that causes stomach discomfort. Duff Monster is easy on the stomach during extended field days. Low acidity does not mean low flavor.

What grind is Duff Monster?
Duff Monster is coarse ground. This grind runs clean in camp percolators, Jetboil Coffee Presses, and French presses without clogging or over-extracting.

How many cups does a 12oz bag of Duff Monster make?
A 12oz bag produces approximately 28 cups based on a standard 8oz mug at the recommended 2 heaping tablespoons per 8oz ratio. Lighter hands will get more cups. Heavier hands will get fewer.

What brewing equipment works with Duff Monster?
Duff Monster is coarse ground and works across camp percolators, Jetboil Coffee Presses, and French presses.

Does Spike Camp Coffee donate to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation?
Yes. $1 from every bag of Duff Monster goes directly to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. Spike Camp posts the running donation total at https://www.spikecampoutpost.com/collections/spike-camp-coffee

Where is Duff Monster coffee roasted?
Duff Monster is roasted small batch by Evans Brothers Roastery in Sandpoint, Idaho. USDA Organic certified. Fair Trade certified. Roasted to order.
